Father's Day Memory Game

How do I love Dad? Let me memorize the ways . . .
by Franny Shuker-Haines

What you need:

  • Your family
  • Your memory
  • Your sense of humor

1. Have everyone in the family, including Dad, sit on the floor in a circle.

2. Someone starts the game by saying, "I love Dad because he's _______." Fill in the blank with any adjective or phrase that comes to mind! For the sake of this explanation, let's say the first person said "funny."

3. The next person in the circle then says, "I love Dad because he's funny and _______." The second person would add her own adjective or phrase after she repeats the adjective or phrase given by the first person.

4. The next person in the circle repeats the process, but this time must say both the preceding adjectives or phrases before adding his adjective or phrase.

5. Dad plays, too, but he can say something self-depracating or silly ("I love Dad because he leaves his socks all over the floor!").

6. Keep taking turns around the circle until it becomes impossible to remember all of the things you've said about Dad!

Variations: To make this game fun for older kids, you can alter the game two ways. The first is to make the phrases or adjectives as esoteric or long as possible: "I love dad because when he gets in the car he always adjusts the mirror and the radio before he turns the key!" The second way is to have your words go in alphabetical order: the first person must say something about Dad that begins with an "A," the second person must start their word or words with a "B," and so forth.
